Reaction to "Love" by Tony Morrison

I found Love to be a book that I necessarily did not "Love" in the beginning. Throughout the entire book I was very confused and it was hard for me to follow the characters and how they were all connected. I guess that was the point of the book though; to not know how they were all connected but in the back of my head, I knew they had to be. I guess I was just taken back on how the word "Love" was expressed in this book. Instead of the typical way we think of love, it seemed to be the opposite.

At first, Bill Cosey seems to be this warm hearted, understanding, and in a way the women's "savior", but then I realized how controlling and pig headish he was! It blew my mind that an older man would want an 11 year old girl to be his wife. Especially when the girl was his granddaughter's best friend. I truly believe the women in the book were longing and searching for this "love" in their life that they were not receiving from their families. I don't think the women really knew what love was and they truly believed that Mr. Cosey was the man that would give them this unfulfilled feeling.

Mr. Cosey not only destroyed the love of a friendship, but he destroyed these women's lives and view on life. He made them think that they deserved the treatment that he was giving them. It made me sick to my stomach at some points as to how he took advantage of all women. May, helping out with the hotel, L and her cookings abilities, Christine for being a good granddaughter that he wanted to send away, and Heed for his sexual pleasure. I was so glad to see a character such as Junior to kind of bring the love back into the lives of the women. To make them realize that this man was not what they deserved and that they should try to find their love for one another.

Overall, this book was not my favorite to read. The only thing I did respect about it, was the fact that this is pretty realistic in some womens cases. In the real world, every man is not perfect and relationships go bad. Some how women stay in these relationships because they can't get out and in some cases they think they can't do any better. I would not recommend the book to anyone else, but it definitely was a bit of an eye opener and a different take on love.

  1. I was also surprised that Bill Cosey would want an 11 year old girl for a wife but when you think about it, it makes sense. Of course he would want someone that he could mold and shape into exactly what he wanted. I enjoyed how you perceived Junior and her role in the story. That was an unclear relationship to me but now that you point it out that she was a sort of reminder of their love, it makes a lot of sense. Great observation. I also think this book gives a realistic view on relationships and how women sometimes stay in screwed up ones because their view of love and their own needs is distorted for some reason.

  2. I agree with you that this book showed the opposite view of what we think "love" is. Many of the relationships that were supposed to have love were very strange. I liked how you talked about Bill Cosey and him being the center of all of the problems. It is interesting that he is the reason all of these women don't get along and after he died they still can't resolve their issues. It was upsetting how he took advantage of these women to run a successful business. I found it very strange that Heed married Bill Cosey so young but in a way it makes sense because I think she enjoyed the attention. She probably looked at the relationship as a way to always see her best friend Christine as well.
